History

The Mimi Saltzman Foundation began as a tiny seedling with my grandfather, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. My father, Arnold Saltzman, expanded on my grandfather's idea, and as his business grew, he taught the value and wisdom of giving.

Joan Saltzman, my mother, was also a lifelong fierce advocate for those in need.

With increasing numbers in peril today worldwide, and a less compassionate climate and political scene, I am pulled in many directions in order to help. After careful consideration I’ve prioritized what seems most urgent."  ~Mimi Saltzman

YAI

My daughter, Chloe, born in 1980 with profound disabilities, has given me a clear window into the unfortunate conditions visited upon people like her. There is stigma and deprivation. YAI provides excellent group homes and health care. I am inspired as there is a dearth of services for this population. We advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.

New Museum

The New Museum and the Mimi Saltzman Internship program offer young people who wants a career in the arts an opportunity to gain experience in a professional museum environment.

We offer a ten week internship which provides mentorship, a good resume, and a reference as they seek employment. The interns report a fulfilling experience which lifts them out of their employment at less interesting jobs. The frequency of interns hired by organizations is growing by the month.

THE HOPE PROGRAM

Dear Mimi,

Thanks for your generous donation. We are so, so appreciative! This grant will allow us to provide direct support to New Yorkers, including computers and mobile hotspots so our students and graduates can continue their skillbuilding, access our training and resources, continue supported job search, and stay plugged in as they shelter in place. This is so critical to our ability to continue to support our neighbors with the greatest needs. Thank you!

 Warmly, Irene B.

The Church

Sag Harbor has become a world renown arts community. The genius of Eric Fischl + April Goring has transformed a 400 year old church into a stunning contemporary museum and art school. The Mimi Saltzman Foundation is now placing interns there.

Shannon H., YAI 2024 intern

During my one-year internship at YAI, I had the opportunity to work as the Special Events Intern in the Advancement and Communications department. As a senior pursuing a career in Events Management, this position strengthened my passion for special events and showed me that this pathway truly is the one for me. While working alongside directors and peers, I gained valuable experience in campaign planning and management, promotions research, media relations, and talent management through our event performers. Additionally, I was able to refine my skills in copywriting, digital design, logistics, and communication, taking my work from student to professional-grade. Our projects cultivated great experiences for the people we support and fueled a fire that encourages me to continue to tackle new challenges in the events industry.

Kiana G. - Lighthouse Guild

At 39 years old I took a courageous but necessary step to reclaim my independence after major vision loss. Months of assistive technology training and vocational rehabilitation prepared me to locate real world experience via an internship, and the Mimi Saltzman Foundation Internship Program made that possible. I knew I could re-learn the skills that would validate my education and make me more employable but I needed time and mentorship. The blessing of support while being shaped by a fantastic mentor in an amazing company changed my life. I’m now a full-time manager at a non- profit that I fully believe in. I can never fully express the gratitude I have for the Mimi Saltzman Foundation. I will however, dedicate my time in positively shaping the lives of others in the same fashion that my internship did with me. Consider the internship process as sowing seeds that later become beautiful flowers making our world a much brighter and more valuable place. Thank you for believing in me.

Kai H. - The Church Sag Harbor

Taking the job at The Church felt like my first official step into the field. My familiarity with Long Island as well as its unique relationship to many creative spirits felt like the perfect place to start my career after graduating and getting the practical skills I need for the future within a space that fosters my own creativity. A lot of my internship responsibilities overlapped with directly engaging with visitors, artists, and residents in a variety of ways which ultimately led to the role I have now as a Visitor Engagement Associate!

DASIA R.

I am so grateful for the opportunities the Mimi Saltzman Foundation has given me to build professional relationships, skills, and confidence. You have been a bridge over many walls that I did not think I could take head on. Thank you for supporting my growth and abilities as a young professional.

Rupi B.

A recipe for success that I learned and will use in the future is knowing yourself and your own goals. I learned what my strengths and weaknesses were and in turn, I will use that knowledge to help achieve my goals. Thank you Water Aid.

Who has been hired?

Our goal for all interns is permanent and satisfying employment. The hired ones have proved their capabilities and become invaluable to the host organizations. A huge win for both entities!

I have learned problem solving skills during my internship at YAI. I would recommend that all interns take their internship as seriously as any full-time job because there is so much to learn when you are an intern. YAI is a wonderful place to hone your skills. Every task that was given to me related to the internship and made me grow and learn. Creating social media content and materials for fundraising was key in my internship. Being a part of such an amazing organization made me feel proud.

Jasmine W.

Interning for WaterAid has been a worthwhile and educational experience. I learned about what goes into doing communications for a nonprofit and that fundraising is more about making connections with people, instead of just asking for donations. Additionally, I really enjoyed being a part of an office environment that has mostly women. Being part of a collaborative, team oriented office was a refreshing experience and I'm grateful for it.
